What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy translates to “Cold” Therapy which is the practice of treating your body to extremely cold temperatures, between -200 and -300 Degrees, for 1-3 minutes.

There can be a few different techniques implored such as full body treatments, targeted treatments, or even localized ice packs (technically cryotherapies) but be sure you are getting your money’s worth!

Although some Arizona Wellness Centers offer what they call “targeted” treatments of cryotherapy, we believe that you benefit more from a full body session. I mean.. why not give your entire body and almost EVERY muscle the same treatment for all of the same benefits you would instead be giving to only one or a few?

Like most therapies, even one treatment can be extremely beneficial. Some people do it twice a day while some find great benefits by starting with a daily treatment for at least a week and then continuing anywhere from 1 to 10 times per month!
Our goal at Protege Performance is to help you find the best Cryotherapy treatments to help you reach your goals.

Benefits Of Cryotherapy

Promote Faster Recovery

Most people know that exercise is the process of tearing down your muscles to they can rebuild, technically “injuring” your muscle tissue in order to heal and replace it with stronger tissue. Cryotherapy has shown to promote healing while SIMULTANEOUSLY helping prevent further injury of muscle tissue.

Reduce Inflammation

A recent study found on the National Institute of Health’s website shows that “cryotherapy reduces the inflammatory process through the decrease of macrophage infiltration and the accumulation of the inflammatory key markers”

Improve Collagen Regulation

Cold temperatures have been shown to promote healing of skin lesions, tighten skin elasticity, and even burn subcutaneous fat! A study partially authored by Rafi Mazor PhD. showed that “Moreover, collagen,... regains elasticity after several freeze-thaw cycles” providing more evidence of the extended benefits of ongoing cryotherapy treatments.

Treat Migraine Symptoms

In a recent Study, it has been shown that there are increased benefits to cryotherapy when treating symptoms of migraines. The rapid cooling of Cryo reduces symptoms “by cooling the blood passing through intracranial vessels.” Pretty cool, huh?!

Improve Mental Health

One Study found “there is also a hormonal response, which increases body metabolism and the concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisone, pro- opiomelanocortin (POMC), and β- endorphins in blood plasma” In other words, Cryotherapy has been shown to help with Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and More!

Improve Nutrient Intake

Regular exercise can affect your post- workout appetite and your bodies ability to consume the additional nutrients taken in directly after training. Cryotherapy has been shown to reduce these negative side effects and increase athletes post- workout appetites. post-exercise WBC (Whole Body Cryotherapy) treatment is suitable for competitive athletes to increase post-exercise energy intake.“
